Jason's Walks

Historical Tours in Hong Kong and Macao

The Peak

Hong Kong's Peak is one of the most popular places for visitors, but not many know its interesting history and quite symbolic role in Hong Kong life, both in pre-British times and later through the 1860's, during the Pacific War and afterwards to the present day.

On this walk we will walk to the very top of Victoria Peak and see the remains of Mountain Lodge, until 1941 the summer residence of the Governors of Hong Kong, and its small gatehouse and enjoy the stunning views in every direction. The development of the Peak Tram, the Peak Cafe, Matilda Hospital and Lugard Road will all be covered. We will then walk part way around Lugard Road to Harlech Road, and go out to see an abandoned pre-war pillbox at High West and disused rifle-range, now a park. From there we will head downhill along Hatton Road to the old Pinewood Battery. From there it is downhill to the main campus of Hong Kong University - on the way we will glimpse an old naval gun through the trees at the University's Vice-Chancellor's Lodge.

The walk will take approximately three- to three and a half hours. Start point will be outside the Peak Cafe, next to the Upper Levels Peak Tramway Station, and we will finish at the Hong Kong University main campus on Bonham Road.
