Jason's Walks

Historical Tours in Hong Kong and Macao

Central District

The walk will focus on the development of the Central District from the early 1840s to the present day, both as an initially European business district and as an administrative centre.  While much of Central’s architectural heritage has been lost to modern development, a surprising number of significant buildings and sites of interest remain.  The walk will be illustrated, as with other historical walks, by means of old photographs of the area and enlivened by numerous anecdotes. The naming of streets, the gradual process of lands reclamation, the development of civic spaces and the process of evolution and change in Hong Kong’s central area will all be discussed.

Among the places to be visited are St. John’s Cathedral and its interesting precinct, the back streets of the market area around Peel, Graham and Gutzlaff Streets, which contain an interesting Earth God shrine, the exteriors of the old Supreme Court (now the Legislative Council), Government House, the French Mission Building (now the Court of Final Appeal), the old Dairy Farm building on Wyndham Street, a row of interesting old houses that have been restored rather than demolished, and the Central Police Station on Hollywood Road.

The walk will start in front of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank headquarters on Queen’s Road Central and finish, after a roundabout route, at the MTR entrance on Pedder Street. The duration of the walk will be around 3 hours in total.
