Jason's Walks

Historical Tours in Hong Kong and Macao

Causeway Bay

The tour will explore the lesser-known historical aspects of Causeway Bay, so often overlooked these days in among the shops and crowds that seem to typify the area in the minds of many residents and visitors.

Starting from Sogo, on the corner of Hennessy and East Point Roads, we will walk to Victoria Park where we will hear about the statue of Queen Victoria now located there.  We will

Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter

learn something of the development of Causeway Bay, then better known as East Point, in the early British period in Hong Kong’s history. The pivotal role of Jardine, Matheson and Co. in the area’s growth and transformation will also be discussed.

From there, we will move to Queen’s College where the evolution of English-medium education in Hong Kong will be briefly discussed.  From there we will walk up to the very old Tin Hau Temple on Tin Hau Temple Road, and after visiting this, walk via a row of old shophouses to the Lin Fa Kung, where the annual Fire Dragon Festival takes place.  After that we will go to St. Paul’s Hospital, briefly taking in the St. John Ambulance Headquarters and the ornate, Chinese-style St. Mary’s Anglican Church.

Sugar Factory

Within the grounds of St. Paul’s Hospital we will visit the lovely old church of Christ the Redeemer.  From there we will walk to the Po Lueng Kuk, and then along Leighton Road in the direction of the Happy Valley racecourse. Along the way we will see some unexpected remonders of the Pacific War. After a brief pause at St. Margaret’s Church on Broadwood Road we will finish the walk up at the Racecourse Fire Memorial, hidden away behind the Hong Kong Stadium on Eastern Hospital Road.

The walk will take between three and three and a half hours in total.
